MARK TWOROW

Tairawhiti is often considered as an idyllic creative environment for artistic people. And like many before him, it now inspires landscape painter Mark Tworow. Tworow moved here from Canada to paint for 1 year, and has been resident for a few months now – ensconced at the expansive Wainui Beach, where his home gallery/studio space is within a very small stones throw of the waves and sand. Mark visited Aotearoa 20 years earlier but didn’t actually make it to Gisborne. His recent arrival at Wainui Beach was intentionally planned as part of a bigger vision to spend time dedicated to painting in a beautiful environment. Tworow describes his home town of Smithers, British Columbia as equally attractive but with mountains and snow.

In relation to his perception of the local landscape he offers the following…”I suspect I have a different interpretation of the local landscape than a local person. I include a lot of formal structure and pattern in my painting.”

Tworow believes that “At some point the art world is going to get sick of all the irony and cynicism. People still appreciate beauty.”  To give context to his work, in the 1920′s there was a collective in Canada called the ‘Group of Seven’ who were most famous for their paintings of the Canadian landscape. They were strongly influenced by European Impressionism of the late nineteenth century.  Mark’s formal considerations of colour and form are more recently influenced by German born – American colourist Wolf Kahn.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta College of Art in the 1990′s, Mark still prioritises a structured time for painting each week. He installs a major solo exhibition bi-annually often showcasing over twenty works.  His works are held in private collections both here in New Zealand, the U.S., and in Canada.

Besides being a serious regular painter, he also manages a book store in Canada which he continues to operate over the internet. Tworow’s works are for sale at his gallery at Wainui.  Part of his vision for his Southern sojourn is to mount an exhibition of his locally inspired works before returning to Canada.
