Eastwoodhill
Gisborne
Eastwoodhill, New Zealand’s National Arboretum has had a long association with the arts, as the venue of Gisborne’s Autumn Arts Fair for some years, and as a place which has inspired many a visitor to grab a camera, pen or paints to capture the myriad colours, textures, and forms of its treasures; the largest collection of Northern Hemisphere trees in the Southern Hemisphere, encompassing an area of over 150 hectares.
Eastwoodhill Arboretum is a picturesque 30 minute drive through vineyards and farmland from Gisborne. It has always been an interesting place to visit – Douglas Cook, the founder of the Arboretum, was a keen naturist who invariably conducted his gardening in nothing but a pair of gumboots and sun hat! It was not unusual for a bottle of sherry, stashed conveniently amongst the shrubs, to be produced for visitors to enjoy a reinforcing tot or two before setting out on a long walk…
Eastwoodhill is keen to see their well-equipped Douglas Cook Centre utilised by artists and arts groups as a unique and inspirational venue for workshops, retreats, conferences and dinner functions. The Centre has an excellent and well-equipped function room and is in the most tranquil and beautiful of natural settings.
The library and function room is equipped with overhead projector, slide projector, whiteboards, TV/Video, fax/email. Catering can be arranged for groups of 15 or over, from delicious morning/afternoon teas to light lunches, bbq meals or fabulous evening dinners. Eastwoodhill also offers accommodation in the form of comfortable budget style bunk rooms and a studio unit which together can sleep up to 22 people. Bed linen is supplied and there are shared kitchen and bathroom facilities.
