On her daily commute over the Auckland Harbour Bridge aboard her shiny red motorbike, Dale Read would dream of one day living on a farm and having the time and space to paint.
And so it was that one day around thirty years ago she was indeed rescued from the business of city living and was whisked away to the small coastal township of Wairoa.
There she remains today, a very happy lady. The motorbike has been gladly replaced with a temperamental blue Fergie tractor and a couple of ponies and carts and, in between planting strawberry patches, maintaining an orchard of hazel nuts and pecans and pottering in her garden, Dale paints away to her heart's content.
Soon after arriving in Wairoa, Dale started with pastels. She has now moved into oil paints, and loves colour and contrast and big in your face stuff.
Never lacking in inspiration, Dale derives huge satisfaction from her home and surroundings; the abundance of water with the river, the lakes and the sea; the idyllic scenes that abound; people fishing, swans swanning, the cliffs, the sunsets. Flowers too have been a constant source of inspiration and there has been a natural cross over between her passion for gardening and floristry and rendering them in paint.
