When your mother is a potter and your father an architect, it is safe to say that art and the act of creative thinking is encouraged.
Karen has always enjoyed being creative. She took art classes at school and went on to study Commercial Art at tertiary level, in Advertising and Display, and this saw her secure full time work in Auckland creating brochures and artwork for newspapers.
Among many of her personal artistic endeavours, Karen designed a first-day-cover in celebration of the century of the telephone, through the Museum of Transport and Technology, MOTAT in Auckland.
Karen created a mixed media piece for the Gisborne District regional Telecom Art Award in 1995, reaching the final selection and gaining herself a highly commended recognition.
And with the advent of digital photography and it’s creative powers, this has seen Karen combine two of her passions; photography and the outdoors. This can be seen in her current work, where she physically cuts and pastes her photography onto different backgrounds to stunning effect. Many of Karen's works capture her enjoyment of the Tairawhiti district and the Urewera ranges.
Finding herself with more personal time to dedicate to her creative practice now that her children have left home, Karen is busy creating. We look forward to seeing more of Karen's work in the coming months…
