Kath Mclaughlin
Gisborne

Kath McLaughlin's art practice represents an evolution that has recently come full-circle, for now at least...
Kath has always been a figurative artist, and has enjoyed portraiture in charcoal and pencil. A love of texture is behind her other long-standing practice of fabric painting which she does on both silk and cotton. Kath creates one-off sarongs with dolphins batiked onto a tie dyed background, many of which are sold through an outlet in Kaikoura.
Kath's hand-painted sarongs and her feel for the human form have recently combined to form a strong theme for a growing body of acrylic works which have become for now the mainstay of her artistic work.
In these works, figures draped in Kath's hand-painted sarongs prance, amble or float through endless summer days. The changing light captures the many moods of the beaches, sea and sand hills which Kath draws upon for inspiration; the figures representing people who have impressed Kath with their style and presence.
As a member of Gisborne's Arts and Crafts Guild, Kath sells her work at their seasonal fairs. She has held a solo exhibition at the Works Restaurant and also participated in group shows such as National Women's Art Exhibition in Gisborne, and with the Affordable Arts Trust in Wellington.

Contact Kath on (06) 867 5366 or mikecat@clear.net.nz to arrange a visit to her home gallery, where she sells her sarongs, photoblocks, greeting cards and paintings, or to arrange a commission. More images of Kath's works can be viewed at www.flickr.com/photos/kathmary
