Sally Simpson
Wairoa

Sally's paintings zoom across the canvas in bright streaks of colour, reflecting the busy life of a painter who commutes between tutoring commitments in Wellington and home, 500 kilometres away. Her paintings are produced both in busy Wellington and in the peace and quiet of her garden studio in Hawkes Bay, where the local influence is clearly reflected.
Sally likes to experiment with many different materials to add a textured element to her abstract work. This often results in unexpected effects when the light changes, creating an interesting and ever changing look. Her landscape inspiration comes from constant travel around our stunning country; her camera is always at the ready to capture the fleeting light effects.
Sally paints for her own satisfaction first, and is delighted if someone else likes what she has done and buys it. She doesn't stress about using paint and materials in a traditional or accepted way, and if a straight line is called for she is never guilty about using a ruler.
Her artwork is sold through galleries in Wellington and the Hawkes Bay.

Sally is currently readying herself for her 7th solo exhibition, being held at the Wairoa Museum and Art Gallery.
