Inspired by his home town Rangitukia, and quite partial to the font Vivaldi, Te Kahurangi Patuwai Findlay can also do wondrous things with a gravity feed, double action spray can with a superfine nozzle.
“People obviously love my work because they steal it…!”
It’s not at all difficult to see why people do indeed love Te Kahurangi’s work; it has a magical and whimsical quality about it. He paints with rich acrylic colours and utilising airbrushing techniques. His works are recognisable in their use of motifs such as Mt Hikurangi, waterfalls, bird and insect life, changing skies caused by the rising and setting of the sun as well as the odd spaceship that pops in from time to time.
Largescale works by Te Kahurangi are scattered throughout the East Coast, as well as in various institutions in Hamilton and Rotorua. If you are on the East Coast, look out for murals and paintings by Te Kahurangi at the Tairawhiti Polytechnic, the Whare Wananga of Ngati Porou, the Ruatorea Kohanga, Whakarua Park, the Te Runanga o te Ra Clubrooms, the George Nepia Memorial Park in Rangitukia, Just Robs Café in Ruatorea and the Te Puia Hospital, and are really the greatest string to Te Kahurangi's artistic bow.
Te Kahurangi loves working with rangitahi, and during school holidays he runs art programmes for under 12 year olds.
