Vouletti Williams
Gisborne

"Art changes, like everything in life"

So says Vouletti van Heusen Williams and one need only to conduct a quick survey of the works she has produced throughout a prolific painting career to see that this is a truth that Vouletti both lives and works by.
In her paintings Vouletti's movements through life can be traced by the buildings and landscapes she has happened upon and been compelled to put to canvas, interspersed with intermittent forays into fantasy when her paintings abound with colour and whimsy.
Flicking through an album of Vouletti's paintings takes one on a journey which begins in the US, where she was born and educated, majoring in art at Skidmore College, in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Painting took a back seat to family for a while and in 1962 Vouletti, her husband Craig and their five small children boarded a passenger liner, which after a two-week journey of "stopping just about everywhere imaginable", arrived in Gisborne - the furthest place they could go from where they'd come, the State of New Jersey.
Another turning point came when Vouletti and Craig lost their garden centre to Cyclone Bola and moved to Palmerston North, where Vouletti recommenced her art, studying under well-known Manawatu landscape artist Jack Register. These days Vouletti spends much of her time immersed in her art.
In 1993 Vouletti won the Telecom Art Award for Gisborne and she continues to exhibit her works from time to time.
