Affiliated to the Photographic Society of New Zealand, the Gisborne Camera Club has been inspiring a love of photography for over ninety years. Founded in 1916, the club went into recess shortly after, due to World War I, when many of its members joined the Armed Forces. The Club re-established in 1934 joining six other photography clubs around the country, in fostering an enthusiasm for photography in their members.
The current Gisborne Camera Club continues to display that energy for the art of photography. It embraces members of all different stages and levels of proficiency, from raw amateurs to skilled professionals.
Each month members are encouraged to take photographs according to a particular brief, or topic, which they then share and discuss at monthly meetings. The brief or topics aim to focus the photographer on a particular way of seeing, whether that is in black and white, macro, or with night eyes perhaps. Photos are evaluated locally amongst members and are also often sent out of the district to be assessed by nationally renowned judges. While this opportunity for a monthly evaluation of photographs is available for members, there is no compulsion to enter unless the individual wishes to do so.
Later this year the Gisborne Camera Club will host "The Art of Seeing", The New Zealand Photographic Society's Central Regional Convention over the weekend of November 9th to the 11th. This promises to be a photographer's dream weekend with workshops, photo shoots, field trips, and a solid line-up of national and international guest speakers.
