The Gisborne Unity Theatre has been producing fantastic drama and comedy shows for over 45 years.
Unity Theatre produce around two to three shows each year, with five or seven performances each season, which they like to spread around the different venues about town, depending on the type of show being performed; keeping things interesting and ambient as appropriate!
Unity Theatre recently won the Theatre section of the Tairawhiti Arts Awards for its show 'Gossamer' and their most recent show, 'Allo 'Allo was performed to sell out audiences.
The organisation is run on a completely voluntary basis. But while the directors, crew and performers are unpaid in monetary terms they feel passionately about their contribution to the arts in Gisborne.
Unity Theatre has also been operating a young Unity division for over 30 years, teaching drama to children over 8 years of age at a very low cost. Young Unity is currently run by Julie McPhail and a couple of dedicated senior high school students and they traditionally perform during the July school holidays at the H.B.Williams Memorial Library..
The Unity Theatre also runs a costume hire service for the community on Saturday mornings and Thursday nights in time for the abundance of wild dress up affairs that seem to take place on a regular basis around these parts..
Schools and other organisations can hire costumes at no charge or a small donation and everyone else are charged very reasonably. The wardrobe continues to grow in strange and wonderful ways through donations from the public and as different shows require new costumes and finery.
Unity Theatre offers opportunities for both young and experienced actors, stage managers and lighting technicians to learn new skills or use their expertise in the drama section of the performing arts.
They are always looking for people for both on stage and back stage.

One year's membership costs $10.
