The Gisborne Woodturners Group
Gisborne

The Gisborne Woodturners Group was formed in 1987, largely through the enthusiasm and drive of teh late Ian Kinloch, a talented amateur woodturner.  Since then there has been an active membership of up to 50, ranging in age from 14 to well into the 70's.  There are few professional turners in the club, most are hobbyists with an interest in woodworking.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in wood or woodworking of any sort, and new members are always welcome (you don't have to be a woodturner to join).  Senior members are more than willing to help novices gain knowledge and expertise.

Club activities centre around a monthly meeting, held at 7.15pm on the 4th Thursday of the month at the Lytton High School Woodwork room, with periodic other events in between.  Each meeting provides a demonstration or talk on some aspect of the craft, or a related subject, by a club member or visiting professional.  Associated with these demonstrations is an on-going competition which encourages members to practice techniques shown at a meeting.

The club owns three modern lathes and various tools, and also a library of books, magazines, and videos.  The club's monthly newsletter, Shavings, has reports, notices of coming events, and items of interest to members.

Members also take part in various activities to raise funds to help with the cost of bringing in outside speakers to Gisborne, as well as some running costs.  The annual subscription has been held at $30 for some years.
