In its eighteen years of existence, the Gisborne Music Competition has firmly established itself as the leading competition event of its kind in Australasia, with a reputation as a well-organised event with a difference.
The Competition began in 1989 as the brainchild of Gisborne Rotarian Ian Dunsmore in response to a lack of opportunities for performance competition for young orchestral musicians in New Zealand. In its 18 years of existence the Competition has developed into an event which has secured itself a spot on the international music calendar, catering to musicians around the world, in any instrument, and has been adopted by the Gisborne Rotary Club as one of its most successful club projects.
Most entrants to the Gisborne Music Competition are pursuing a career in music, with many going on to play in the NZ Symphony Orchestra or other major orchestras around the world. There are many notable examples of past competitors who have established themselves as international soloists and tutors of very high standing.
The Gisborne Music Competition organisers have developed a programme which offers competitors a vastly different experience from that which would be the norm at similar such events elsewhere in the world. Gisborne’s relaxed and welcoming music community cover competitors’ accommodation and food expenses through hosting arrangements, and the week’s programme incorporates an informal get-together, barbeque, school visits and workshops, street busking and an outdoor free public concert into the more serious competitive aspects of the event. The Competition itself is very tightly organised and the Jurors and Accompanists are of the highest international standing.
