Women's Art Exhibition - WAX
Gisborne

The first Women's Art Exhibition was held five years ago when a handful of local female artists submitted four or five artworks each to be exhibited over a two day period at Lindauer Cellars - a working winery located in the middle of Gisborne's industrial subdivision.
In stark contrast the 2007 event was held over a week, attracting artists from all over New Zealand, from the Far North to Nelson to Otago, and encompassing mixed media works, sculpture and painting. Not only has the exhibition, now known as WAX, become an annual fixture in the local events calendar but it is also steadily gaining national recognition and bringing visitors from around the county to Gisborne over Queens Birthday weekend.
WAX organizer Sheree McLeod has taken care to keep the event fresh and interesting as it continues to grow. WAX 2007 saw new categories and prizes added to the mix including a Maori Art Award.
The location of WAX undoubtedly provides a point of difference to your average art exhibition experience...with artworks hanging amongst towering steel vats, interspersed with the 'Finished Wine' signs and with the ever present earthy fragrance of wine, it seems to make a lot of sense to linger on for a glass or two of wine in the sun...
