Three Generations: Barns-Graham opens at The Pencil Gallery, 12 October

This stunning exhibition features the art from three generations of artists in the Barns-Graham family, Allan, John and Andrew Barns-Graham

Showcasing rare artworks from the Estate Collection of the late Allan Barns-Graham, a recognised and credited WWII artist, new work from his son, John Barns-Graham, who resides in Gisborne and John's son, Andrew Barns-Graham, a contemporary artist based in Auckland.

Allan Barns-Graham was born in Gisborne in 1906, studied fine arts at the Glasgow School of Art, and the Slade School of Art, London University.

Upon his return from the United Kingdom, he worked as a professional portrait artist in Auckland until the war broke out, when he began trying to volunteer for service in the Middle East. He was eventually enlisted as a member of the 1st Battalion, New Zealand Scottish Regiment and sent to New Caledonia in late 1942.

While there, the position of Official War Artist was posted as a competition throughout the entire Division. According to his sons recollections, Barns-Graham applied but was turned down by his senior officer (saying 'over my dead body'), however on being reapproached that evening in front of several other senior officers, the officer consented.

Post-war, Barns-Graham taught at Gisborne Girls High School from 1950 until his retirement. He was active in the local arts community and was instrumental in the establishment of the Tairawhiti Museum. Allan Barns-Graham passed in November 2006.

The exhibition will be installed at The Pencil Gallery, 89 Grey Street in Gisborne, until the 28th of October 2007.
